The Adobe® Acrobat®
Reader is an application that allows you
to open up PDF documents. Many reports and articles
on the Web are stored in this format and having the
Adobe Reader installed on your computer will provide
you access to this kind of material. Following are directions
for downloading a free copy of the Adobe Reader.
Please read the instructions completely and then
print these directions so you have them in hand during
the downloading and installation process.
- Log onto the Internet using whatever provider is
available to you.
- Go to the following Web-site location: http://www.adobe.com
This
will take you to the Adobe home page. Look for the
yellow button labeled "Get Acrobat Reader."
Click on the button.
- You will now be on a page that provides instructions
on getting the free Adobe Reader. You will need to
complete the information in the three columns labeled
"Step 1, Step 2, Step 3."
- In the first column, you will choose the
preferred language, platform and your connection speed.
- In the second column, you are required to
complete a very brief survey and to type in your e-mail
address.
- In the third column, click on the red button
labeled "Download." It may take several minutes
until you actually get to the site that connects you
to the software. If the site is busy, you may need
to try at another time.
- Once you are connected, you will see a box requiring
you to choose where you want the program to be saved
on your computer. The default that is given is to
save the file to your desktop. It is easiest to allow
the file to save to this location, but you can choose
to save the file to a temporary file on your computer
if you prefer.
- After choosing the location and making a note of
the file name, click on the "Save" button.
You will then see a display that tells you that the
system is saving the file. It will show the location
where it is being saved and the amount of time left
to download the program. It may take from 5 minutes
to 25 minutes to download depending on your modem
connection. Be patient.
- When the downloading is complete, close out of the
Web site and go to the desktop (or the location where
you saved the program).
- Look for a file that begins with the letters "ar"
and ends with an ".exe" extension. Double click
on the file to open it.
- You will be asked if you want to install the program.
Press "Yes" to continue. You will be asked
to read the license agreement and to press "Next"
to complete the installation.
- Once the installation is complete you will need
to restart your computer. After you restart and are
sure that the Adobe Reader is working, you can delete
the "ar" file from your desktop.
- You are now ready to open PDF documents using the
Adobe Reader.
