In October of 2005 this Institution became the setting for a pilot program of support and counseling that was unique to our correctional facility.  This program, called Theotherapy, was conducted by the volunteers of Theotherapy Inc., whose offices are currently located in Murrysville, PA.  Every Thursday evening for six months and also for eight hours every third Saturday, a group of 7 to 14 disciplined and well trained volunteers have worked intensely with approximately 40 of our inmates to develop “life principles” which have the potential to dramatically change their lives for the good.

As I observed many of these sessions I saw biblical teachings, therapy techniques, and explorations of psychological history combined to initiate God’s healing (which is the literal meaning of Theotherapy).  Although the first program concluded only a few weeks ago I have already observed positive changes in men who have been through the meetings.  I have seen men being able to let go of their anger and have hope for the future.  One particular inmate that I have known for many years as someone always ready to fight recently refused to respond to an altercation.  When asked why he replied, “I’m not about that anymore, I’ve changed”.  It is becoming very evident that those who participated in the program have been given resources for life-changing spirituality.

I would recommend the Theotherapy program as a positive influence for change in our Institution or any other correctional facility it might be brought into.  I am honored that S.C.I. Greensburg was the facility it was first introduced to in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and look forward to its continued presence here.  If I can give any further insight about this fine organization and program, please contact me.
